Orthognathic surgery is an operation in which the bones that carry the face, teeth, and thus both eliminate bite disorders and correct facial proportions can be achieved. Our teeth are arranged on the lower jaw, which we call the mandible, and on the upper jaw, which we call the maxilla. With orthognathic surgery, mobilization is performed to the places where the arcs in which these teeth are sorted should be. It is basically an operation that corrects both biting disorders and corrects facial proportions.
Orthognathic surgery is my favorite form of treatment. We can also get very positive results in facial appearance by mobilizing the jawbones on my patient’s face while treating both bite disorders. In fact, we have many aesthetic applications in the face area, but we can provide a beautiful smile with orthognathic surgery. With its effect on the Middle face, lower face and neck areas, we can reach the positive result that the patient is looking for.
By beautiful smile, we mean laughing
- Proper sorting of teeth
- The entire size of the upper teeth and the appearance of additional gums 1-2 mm
- at rest, the upper teeth appear only 1-2 mm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Crooked images that occur in my teeth, so sequence problems always require surgery?
There are some cases of these sequence disorders that occur in the teeth that can only be corrected by orthodontists with wire treatments. In other words, there is no disorder in the position of the lower and upper jaws on which the teeth sit, but there is a problem in the arrangement of the teeth on these bones. Orthodontists can eliminate these disorders with wire treatments they do. But sometimes there is such a situation that the mobilization of the teeth may not resolve the problem of biting and the ratio problems on the face. In this case, orthognathic surgery should activate the bones on which the teeth sit.
If some orthodontists do not have a surgical option in their treatment portfolio, in fact, there are problems at the level of the bones, and when they try to deal with it only by moving the teeth or by pulling the teeth, many undesirable results can occur. For this reason, it is advantageous to work with orthodontists who can prepare the patient for surgery while looking for a beautiful smile.
How should the order of treatment be? Should orthodontic treatment be performed first or orthognathic surgery?
It actually depends a little on what the team prefers. In general, orthodontic treatment first provides the sorting of teeth on the jaw. Then orthognathic surgery is performed in which the bones are mobilized. Since we think that surgery is not suitable for most cases, we usually first glaze the teeth with orthodontic treatment and plan accordingly and apply the surgery.
How will it be after surgery?
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia. After overnight hospitalization, we connect the lower and upper teeth with a tire, depending on the patient’s adaptation and the nature of the procedure. This period ranges from 5 to 10 days. During this period, the patient drinks juicy clean. Then, mealtimes go 1-2 weeks by opening the teeth and swallowing food that has been passed through the Rondo. He is then allowed to grind soft food with his back teeth. After that, he switches to harder foods as he can tolerate. In 1-1, 5 months, he becomes food for hard things.
After surgery, the orthodontist can continue some rütuş treatments. An edema initially occurs in the facial area, but this decreases over time. Half of the initial payment is in the first 3 weeks, 80% is in the first 3 months, while the details are sitting within 6 months.
Will I be able to see what kind of face it will look like after surgery?
I have always made it my principle to give detailed information to my patient about the shape of the face after surgery. I do this by showing pictures of patients with similar problems before and after surgery so that my patients have an idea.
In what cases is orthognathic surgery required?
In Normal facial development, the lower and upper jaws, where the lower and upper teeth sit, develop and grow in harmony. For various reasons, this can be genetic or it can be environmental reasons, this harmonious development cannot occur and the percentage,
- Face length can be more than
- Face length may be less
- Lower jaw can be left behind
- Lower jaw may be ahead
- Upper jaw can be left behind
- Upper jaw may be ahead
- The lower and upper jaw are in place and there may be problems with the tip of the jaw.
- The vertical length of the upper jaw may be excessive, in which case patients usually have excessive gums when they laugh (gummy smile).
- The vertical length of the upper jaw is not much, and the upper teeth appear very buried.
- Because there is an early touch on the back teeth when it bites, the teeth may not close completely in the front (anerior open-bite).
Orthognathic surgery is required in these cases.
Should I be more afraid of jaw surgery than other surgeries?
Orthognathic surgical operations were once very long and difficult operations.
